Philosophy & History

Shin Bu Kai Karate Do was developed in 1968 in Australia to become one of the major karate systems taught in Australia also the United States as well as Japan. This system of Karate do was developed by Les Anyos (Sosai) who first stepped into a Boxing Gym in 1956 he has been involved in the Fighting Arts ever since. His introduction to Karate was through the Kyokushinkai Kan in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Les then trained intensely at Bancoora Beach developing what is known as Shin Bu Kai today.

Shin Bu Kai Karate Do is affiliated with Professor Charles Dixon’s Shinjimasu Goju based in the United States. Through the years, Sosai befriended and trained alongside the most respected martial artists in Australia and overseas including some of the key figures in Australian martial arts. They include:

  • Professor John Hoffman,
  • Shihan John Watkin (deceased)
  • Professor Wally Jay
  • Mr. Ed Parker
  • Mr. Ray Tobosa
  • Hideyuki Sato*
  • Kyoshi Tino Ceberano
  • Kyoshi Sama Bob Jones
  • Grandmaster William Cheung

*Hideyuki Sato became Sosai's student in what he called "Australian Karate".


Shin Bu Kai combines the traditions of Japanese Karate and Kobu jutsu with the modern fighting arts as in Kick Boxing, Tournament Karate and Boxing.

Sosai was instrumental in the Formation of the Karate Instructors Association of Australasia. He is one of the founders of Australian Kickboxing (President of WAKO Australia). Along with his family Beryl ,Richard, Brian, Danny and Sharon, the Anyos's have become one of the respected and well known martial art clans in Australia and overseas.
